James Blunt hasn’t had the easiest ride from critics over the years. Since breaking through with his multi-platinum debut album Back To Bedlam, Blunt has found himself constantly criticised by music critics for being what they perceive to be dull.
Regardless his 2007 follow-up All The Lost Souls was another big success for Blunt selling over 4.5 million copies across the world. Now 3 years on Blunt has just released his eagerly-awaited third album Some Kind of Trouble and is moving away from the sad sounds that filled his first two albums.

Some Kind of Trouble contains 12 new tracks including Blunt’s current single Stay The Night. Leading up to the release Blunt has spoken of how he needed to take a break after his last album so he could find inspiration once again after feeling that he was repeating himself by writing yet more sad songs. That break seems to have done him some good and means that Some Kind of Trouble enjoys a variety and musical experimentation that we’ve not heard from Blunt before. Opening with Stay The Night the album gets off to a jolly start without alienating fans of Blunt’s previous releases. The rest of the album is a real mixture of sounds and gets really interesting with the second track Dangerous. With a stronger beat than we’ve heard before, the track is darker in tone and marks a real progression for Blunt. From that point on the record takes you to unexpected places adding rockier riffs and stronger beats (So Far Gone), jerkier guitar rhythms (I’ll Be Your Man) and shimmering melodies (Superstar).
Fans of Blunt’s first two albums needn’t worry about this change in sound as there are plenty of nods his classic sound. The piano ballad Best Laid Plans features Blunt’s falsetto as he sings of a relationship not turning out the way he expected whilst If Time Is All I Have is a heartfelt song exploring feelings of love long after a relationship has ended.
Our favourite moment comes on the album closer Turn Me On. With a deep and dirty bassline, hushed vocals and a menacing edge the track unlike anything Blunt has recorded before. Once the beat kicks in and Blunt’s vocals changes from hushed to aggressive you sense a real freedom that is quite refreshing and exhilarating. Lyrically it’s also a bit naughty for the man once thought of as the wettest man in the music industry (something we’ve never believed by the way).
Some Kind of Trouble is a real treasure trove of an album. The more you listen to it, the more gems you uncover. It’s an album that demands you listen to it from start to finish paying close attention to the lyrics. We had the album on loop for most of a day when it first arrived and now it’s safely on the top of our iPod playlist. Other people may tell you James Blunt isn’t cool but we’re telling you he’s one of the coolest. Some Kind of Trouble is a triumphant record and contains some of Blunt’s strongest work to date.
